    What is SHGC?

    Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures how well a glass package resists unwanted solar heat gain, which is especially important during cooling seasons. The lower the number, the less solar heat passes through the glass.

    What is VT?

    Visible Transmittance measures how much visible light passes through the glass. The higher the number, the more natural daylight the glass allows into the space.

    What is UV Transmission?

    Installation

    Casco only services and installs into Casco brand windows. For non-Casco glass repair, glazing, or window service needs, installation should be completed by a qualified local glass professional, glazing contractor, window repair company, dealer, or installer.


    Inspection at Delivery or Pickup

    The receiving party should inspect the glass at delivery or pickup, confirm the size and order details, check for visible damage, and make sure the glass matches the order before installation.

    Any visible damage, size concerns, order discrepancies, or handling concerns should be documented before the glass is installed.


    Storage Before Installation

    Insulating glass should be stored vertically in a safe, stable, protected location with proper edge protection. Glass should not be stored flat or laid down before installation.

    Insulating glass should also be protected from jobsite debris, standing water, direct edge damage, heavy impact, unsafe handling conditions, and exposure that could damage glass surfaces, coatings, spacers, edges, or Preserve film.

    Project teams should follow any Cardinal or Casco handling instructions for the specific glass type, coating, Preserve film, specialty glass, or fabricated IG unit being used.


    Glass Breakage During or After Installation

    What is CLiC glass?

    CLiC is Cardinal’s switchable privacy glass technology. It changes from clear to private using powered liquid crystal technology, allowing privacy on demand while still allowing light into the space.

    CLiC can be reviewed for windows, doors, partitions, conference rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, offices, street-facing windows, side yards, healthcare spaces, and other openings where privacy control is needed without permanent obscure glass or a traditional window treatment.

    How does CLiC glass create privacy?

    CLiC uses liquid crystal technology. When the glass is in the private state, the liquid crystals scatter light, creating a translucent privacy appearance. When powered to the clear state, the liquid crystals align and the glass becomes clear.

    This allows the same glass opening to switch between clear viewing and privacy mode depending on the user’s needs.

    Where can CLiC glass be used?

    CLiC can be reviewed for residential and commercial interior and exterior applications where the glass is used within an appropriate framed window, door, or wall system.

    Is CLiC the same as obscure glass?

    No. Obscure glass provides permanent privacy through a fixed pattern or finish. CLiC provides on-demand privacy by switching between clear and private modes.

    Obscure glass is often used when privacy is always needed. CLiC is used when the customer wants privacy control without permanently blocking the clear view.

    Does CLiC require power?

    Yes. CLiC is a powered switchable privacy glass product. Wiring, controls, power requirements, access, and installation details must be reviewed before ordering.

    CLiC project planning should include the contractor, electrician, glazing contractor, builder, architect, or project team responsible for integrating the glass into the final opening.

    Can CLiC be used in curved, shaped, or frameless glass?

    CLiC is not currently available in curved or shaped configurations. It must also be used in a framed window, door, or wall system and is not available as an exposed-edge or frameless polished-edge fabricated glass product.

    Glass Performance Terms

    What is U-Factor?

    U-Factor measures how well a glass package can keep heat from escaping from the inside of a room. The lower the number, the better the glass package is at resisting heat loss.

    What is SHGC?

    Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures how well a glass package resists unwanted solar heat gain. The lower the number, the less solar heat passes through the glass.

    What is VT?

    Visible Transmittance measures how much visible light passes through the glass. The higher the number, the more natural daylight the glass allows into the space.

    What is UV transmission?

    UV transmission measures how much ultraviolet light passes through the glass. Lower UV transmission can help reduce fading potential for flooring, furniture, fabrics, artwork, and interior finishes.

    Are glass performance values exact for every order?

    No. Published glass performance values are reference values and can vary by complete glass package. Coating selection, glass thickness, airspace, gas fill, spacer, dual pane or triple pane construction, and other details can affect final performance.

    Cardinal center-of-glass or IGU performance values are not the same thing as full window or door NFRC ratings. Final code compliance depends on the full certified window or door system, frame, sash, spacer, coating, glass thickness, gas fill, and certified product configuration.

    Can insulating glass alone meet energy code?

    No. Insulating glass alone does not confirm energy code compliance. Energy code compliance is based on the full certified window or door system and product requirements, not only the IG unit.

    The complete product configuration, frame, sash, spacer, glass coating, glass thickness, gas fill, hardware, weatherstripping, installation, and certified rating should be reviewed where code compliance is required.

    What does argon gas do in insulating glass?

    Argon gas is used in insulating glass units to help lower U-Factor and improve thermal performance. Cardinal’s argon gas filling bulletin explains that insulating glass units cannot be 100% filled with any gas and that Cardinal designs units to have initial average argon fills of 90% or above unless otherwise specified.

    When should triple pane glass be reviewed?

    Triple pane glass may be reviewed where additional thermal performance is required or where the product calls for a lower U-Factor glass package.     Condensation, Fogging, Fading, and Cleaning

    Why is there condensation on my glass?

    Condensation can occur when warm, humid air contacts a colder glass surface. Depending on the conditions, condensation may appear on the room side glass surface, exterior glass surface, or between the panes if the insulating glass seal has failed.

    Condensation does not always mean the glass is defective. Interior humidity, exterior temperature, glass temperature, room ventilation, window coverings, and air movement can all affect condensation. For more information, review Cardinal’s Insulating Glass Condensation bulletin.

    In some restoration or comfort situations, Storm Windows may also be reviewed as a related exterior protection and comfort option for existing windows. Storm windows do not eliminate all condensation conditions and should be reviewed based on the existing opening, ventilation, humidity, and installation conditions.

    What is fogging between glass panes?

    Fogging between the panes can be a sign that the insulating glass seal has failed, but some fogging-like appearances can also be related to chemical fogging or other glass conditions.

    Can glass reduce fading inside a home?

    Yes, selected glass packages can reduce fading potential by lowering UV and visible light transmission. However, no glass option completely eliminates fading.     Glass Breakage and Tempered Glass Breakage

    Why did my glass randomly break?

    Glass breakage can feel random because the actual cause is not always visible after the glass breaks. Glass may break from impact, edge damage, scratches, chips, thermal stress, sash or frame racking, pressure differences, installation pressure, setting block issues, or other field conditions.

    In patio doors, sidelites, large fixed units, and other larger glass openings, breakage may be more noticeable because the glass area is larger and the glass is often tempered for safety. Tempered glass is designed to break into many small pieces rather than large sharp shards, so when it breaks it can appear sudden and complete.

    Can tempered glass break by itself?

    Tempered glass can sometimes appear to break by itself, especially when no one sees an impact or obvious cause. This is uncommon, but possible. Tempered glass stores internal stress from the tempering process, and breakage can occur if the glass has edge damage, a surface flaw, installation pressure, thermal stress, frame pressure, or another stress point.

    In rare cases, fully tempered glass may also experience spontaneous breakage related to nickel sulfide inclusions. This type of breakage is uncommon, but it is one reason tempered glass breakage can seem unexplained to a homeowner or building owner.

    Tempered glass is still used because it is safety glass. When it breaks, it is designed to fracture into many small pieces instead of large sharp shards.

    Why do patio doors and sidelites sometimes seem to shatter without warning?

    Patio doors and sidelites often require tempered safety glass because of their size, location, and use near doors or walking areas. If tempered glass breaks, it usually breaks across the entire lite at once, which can make the failure look sudden or unexplained.

    Possible causes include prior impact, edge damage, pressure from the frame or sash, movement in the opening, thermal stress, installation pressure, contact with hard objects, or rare spontaneous tempered glass breakage. A broken unit should be reviewed before assuming the cause.

    What is thermal glass breakage?

    Thermal breakage can occur when there is a large temperature difference between the edge and center of the glass. Solar absorption, shading patterns, indoor blinds or draperies, overhangs, glass coating, tint, frame design, glass edge quality, and outdoor temperature can all affect thermal stress.

    What is heat-strengthened glass?

    Heat-strengthened glass is glass that has been heat treated to provide added strength compared with annealed glass, but it is not the same as fully tempered safety glass. It may be reviewed where additional resistance to thermal stress or product conditions is needed.

    Heat-strengthened glass should be reviewed based on application, code requirements, glass size, coating selection, and product conditions.

    Can insulating glass be ordered with laminated glass?

    What does GBG mean?

    GBG means grilles between the glass. These are internal grille bars sealed inside the insulating glass unit to create a divided-lite appearance without exterior removable grilles.

    Yes. Grilles between the glass are available in multiple profiles, sizes, patterns, and color combinations. Grille options should be confirmed before ordering because they can affect glass configuration, airspace, argon fill percentage, U-Factor, availability, and lead time.

    Can internal grilles make noise?

    In some conditions, internal grilles may briefly contact the glass surface and create a rattling noise, especially in large glass units, patio doors, or units exposed to movement or pressure changes.     Yes. Grille options vary by Casco product. For Casco manufactured products, SDL, GBG, removable grille, and internal grille availability must be reviewed on the specific product page.
